Roof boxes are pieces of storage equipment used for cars, they are placed on top of the car and can hold extra luggage and other items. Roof boxes require that the car already has roof bars installed, the car roof box is attached to the roof bars securely ensuring that the roof box will remain in place. Roof boxes can offer allot of extra space and storage, if your car boot is usually very full when you go on holiday or travel large distances then a roof box would come in very handy, many roof boxes offer the equivalent amount of space that half an average car boot would offer.

The capacity of car roof boxes is measured in litres, this dictates the amount of storage space that the roof box will offer. The capacity of the roof boxes could be stated as 250L or 250 litres, the larger the number the larger the car roof box will be and the more luggage you will be able to fit into the roof box. Roof boxes also have a weight capacity which will be stated with the roof box, you should not go over this weight capacity as it could be un-safe to travel with an over loaded roof box.

The shape of the car roof box is also important, the more stream lined it is the less wind resistance it will produce and therefore save you money on petrol costs. Some models have a lowered base design so that they offer less wind resistance and therefore be more efficient on petrol costs, these are well worth looking out for as on most holidays large distances will be traveled.

The main manufacturer of roof boxes is Thule, Thule offer a wide range of high quality roof boxes with the features mentioned above. As well as Thule there are many other manufacturers, shops such as Halfords also sell their own brand roof boxes which can be cheaper than the branded Thule models.

There are many shops that sell roof boxes with the most popular being Halfords, Halfords have a wide range of roof boxes and sell top quality Thule roof boxes as well as their high quality, cheaper own brand Halfords roof boxes. When buying a roof box remember that you need roof bars, without roof bars you will not be able to attach the roof box to the car. Then the main points to remember when buying a car roof box are the space and weight capacities and the aerodynamics of the roof box, you want the largest roof box you can get but remember that the larger and heavier roof boxes will impact on the efficiency of your car. Aerodynamic roof boxes can help with this as they have lower wind resistance so will save on petrol costs and allow your car to travel faster and further on the same petrol. If you are looking for a cheap roof box then have a good shop around, many of the shops offer cheap roof boxes and cheap special offers so some good money can be saved, Halfords is a good place to start though.
