Cars are often left for long periods of time so car security products are a very good investment, they can secure parts of your car so that it cannot be driven, provide a good deterrent to people thinking of stealing your car and they can also alert other people if someone attempts to steal your car. These car security products are also very cheap, you can get a steering wheel lock, wheel clamp or car alarm for under £30 and they are well worth the investment compared to having your car stolen.

Steering wheel locks are a very good form of in car security, they fix onto the steering wheel so that it cannot be turned, making it impossible to drive the car. There are a few features to look out for with steering wheel locks, the first is the Thatcham rating. The Thatcham rating is a good indication of how secure the steering wheel lock is as Thatcham are a security rating company who's ratings are often used by car insurance companies, often the car insurance company will ask what security equipment you have for your car and what Thatcham rating the car security equipment has. Another feature to look for is the size of the car security equipment, most steering wheel locks will fit most steering wheels but if you have a large steering wheel then you should check the size, you can get large models for 4x4's, MPV's and vans. The other feature to look out for is the type of lock, anti saw and anti drill locks will provide greater security as the lock is the most vulnerable part of most car security products.

There are also other types of in car security, one of the most popular is the device that locks the handbrake to the gear stick. Locking the gear stick to the handbrake makes it impossible to drive the car so these gear stick to handbrake locking devices are great and even better when used with a steering wheel lock, using both will provide a very good deterrent to car thieves.

Another type of lock that you can buy is the wheel clamp, these clamp the wheel of any vehicle so that it cannot be moved. Wheel clamps are a great deterrent as they are on the outside of the car so are very visible, wheel clamps can also be used on vehicles with no steering wheel like caravans and trailers.

The other type of in car security is the car alarm, these are simple alarms that will detect if doors are opened or if the ignition key is turned while the car alarm is armed. Most car alarms have a flashing LED to alert the car thief to the presence of the car alarm, this provides great deterrent as the car thief is aware that the alarm will activate if they try to steal the car. If the car thief does try to steal the car then most alarms have several ways of detecting intrusion, they are doors being opened or an impact to the vehicle, they detect impact to the vehicle using electronic shock sensors. Car alarms can also detect when the ignition key is turned, the alarm will react in different ways to different actions so for instance if there is an impact to the car the alarm may only activate the lights but if the car is broken into then the full siren can sound. The siren is a very important part of the car alarm as the louder it is the more it will alert other people and deter the car thief from stealing your car, the power of the siren is measured in decibels and is normally stated like 128db, the louder the siren is the better.

There are also many security products available for motorcycles, they are similar to car security equipment in that they normally feature locks. With motorcycles it is not as easy to lock the steering or handbrake like with cars so they normally concentrate on wheel locks, these are similar to the locks you can buy for bikes but are tougher and usually have Thatcham approval. These locks are either chain or disc locks, the chain locks are steel chains that go through the wheel so that the motorcycle cannot be moved, the disc locks are small devices which are similar to padlocks and also go through the wheel so that the motor cycle cannot be moved.
